Antarctica is one of the last places on Earth that hasn’t been claimed
by any country. The frozen continent’s extreme climate makes it
unforgiving to humans, and an agreement by the world’s governments
prevents anything but scientific research and exploration — any military
or industrial activity is explicitly prohibited. But scientists still
need to get around, and until now, tracked vehicles running on fossil
fuels have been the norm. Enter Formula E team Venturi, who are working
to change transportation on Antarctica with their Mission 03 electric
rover. The Mission 03 runs on the same batteries used in Venturi’s
Formula E cars and can travel up to 27 miles fully loaded with three
people and equipment at 12 MPH. The Mission 03 isn’t as fast as Formula E
cars, but with no carbon footprint, its perfect for one of the most
scientifically important places on the planet.
